Berry Basil Mezcal Margarita: A Refreshing Twist on a Classic Cocktail

Smoky Mezcal Margarita with homemade berry basil syrup, perfect for summer gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries), plus extra for garnish
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 4 ounces Mezcal (Espadín recommended)
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 2 ounces Berry Basil Syrup (recipe above)
  • 1 ounce Cointreau or other orange liqueur
  • Lime wedges, for rimming glasses
  • Coarse salt or sugar, for rimming glasses (optional)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the fresh mixed berries, granulated sugar, and water.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is simmering, add the fresh basil leaves. Gently press them down into the liquid to ensure they are submerged.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly for about 5-10 minutes. Place a fine-mesh sieve over a heat-proof bowl or jar. Pour the berry mixture through the sieve, pressing down on the solids with a spoon or spatula to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
  6. Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  7. If desired, rim your glass with salt or sugar. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a margarita glass or coupe glass. On a small plate, spread out some coarse salt or sugar. Gently press the rim of the glass into the salt or sugar to coat it evenly.
  8. In a cocktail shaker, combine the Mezcal, fresh lime juice, Berry Basil Syrup, and Cointreau (or other orange liqueur).
  9. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice.
  10. Secure the lid on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds.
  11. Strain the margarita into your prepared glass filled with fresh ice.
  12. Garnish with a lime wedge, a few fresh berries, and a sprig of fresh basil.

Notes

  • Adjust Sweetness: Reduce the amount of Berry Basil Syrup for a less sweet margarita.
  • Spice it Up: Add a slice of jalapeño to the Berry Basil Syrup while simmering or muddle a small piece in the shaker.
  • Berry Variations: Experiment with different berry combinations.
  • Mocktail: Substitute Mezcal with non-alcoholic tequila or sparkling water.
  • Frozen Margarita: Blend all ingredients with 2 cups of ice.
  • Basil Infusion: Infuse Mezcal with basil leaves for a stronger flavor.
  • Rim Variations: Try a chili powder and sugar rim.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Make Ahead: The Berry Basil Syrup can be made ahead of time. Pre-mix the margarita ingredients in a pitcher and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
