Chocolate Chip Baked Donuts: The Ultimate Recipe for Deliciousness

Easy baked chocolate chip donuts, perfect for a weekend treat! These donuts are soft, cakey, and loaded with chocolate chips, topped with a simple vanilla glaze (optional).

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (or more, to reach desired consistency)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles, for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan well with cooking spray or melted butter.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate, medium-sized bowl, combine the granulated sugar and brown sugar.
  4. To the bowl with the sugars, add the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Gently fold together using a spatula or wooden spoon until just moistened. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  7. Transfer the batter to a piping bag or zip-top bag (snip off a corner). Pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While the donuts are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, a teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  11. Once the donuts are completely cool, dip them into the glaze, one at a time, and then place them back on the wire rack to allow the excess glaze to drip off.
  12. Sprinkle with sprinkles immediately after glazing, before the glaze sets.
  13. Allow the glaze to set completely before serving (about 15-20 minutes).

Notes

  • Don’t Overmix: Overmixing the batter will result in tough donuts.
  • Grease the Pan Well: A well-greased donut pan is essential for preventing sticking.
  • Don’t Overbake: Overbaked donuts will be dry.
  • Cool Completely Before Glazing: Glazing warm donuts will cause the glaze to melt.
  • Customize Your Donuts: Experiment with different extracts, chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruit, or spices.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Buttermilk Substitute: Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup of milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • Chocolate Chip Variations: Use mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bars.
  • Add Spices: A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg can add a warm flavor.
  • Make it Vegan: Substitute the egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water, let sit for 5 minutes). Use a plant-based milk alternative instead of buttermilk, and ensure your chocolate chips are dairy-free.
