Drunken Monkey Rum Cocktail: The Ultimate Tropical Recipe

A tropical cocktail with dark rum, banana liqueur, lime, and muddled banana. Smooth, refreshing, and flavorful.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz Dark Rum (aged rum recommended)
  • 1 oz Banana Liqueur
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 0.75 oz Simple Syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1/2 Ripe Banana (for muddling)
  • Ice Cubes
  • Banana Slice (for garnish)
  • Optional: Maraschino Cherry (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Muddle the Banana: In a cocktail shaker, add the half ripe banana, cut into small pieces. Gently muddle the banana until it forms a smooth puree.
  2. Add the Liquids: Pour in the dark rum, banana liqueur, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker with the muddled banana.
  3. Add the Bitters: Add the two dashes of Angostura bitters.
  4. Add Ice: Fill the cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  5. Shake Vigorously: Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  6. Double Strain: Place a Hawthorne strainer on top of the shaker, and then use a fine-mesh strainer to strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
  7. Garnish: Garnish with a fresh banana slice. You can also add a maraschino cherry, if desired.
  8. Serve Immediately: Enjoy your Drunken Monkey cocktail immediately!

Notes

  • Use a dark, aged rum for a richer flavor. Spiced rum or light rum can be used for variations.
  • Adjust simple syrup to your sweetness preference.
  • Freshly squeezed lime juice is essential.
  • Double straining is crucial to remove banana pulp for a smooth texture.
  • Chill your glass before serving.
  • Experiment with garnishes like banana chips or chocolate-covered bananas.
  • For a creamier version, add 1 oz of coconut cream.
  • For a frozen version, blend all ingredients with a cup of ice.
  • To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan, heat until sugar dissolves, simmer for 1 minute, and cool completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
