Hamburger Potato Casserole: The Ultimate Comfort Food Recipe

Hearty casserole with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, melted cheddar, and buttery breadcrumbs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 56 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess grease.
  2. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until onion is softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well.
  4. If using, add frozen peas or mixed vegetables and heat through.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  6. Peel and thinly slice potatoes (about 1/8 inch thick).
  7. Place potato slices in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.
  8. Drain potatoes well and pat dry with paper towels.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  10. Spread a thin layer of ground beef mixture on the bottom of the dish.
  11. Arrange a layer of potato slices over the ground beef, overlapping slightly.
  12. Sprinkle about 1/3 cup of cheddar cheese over the potato layer.
  13. Repeat layers: ground beef mixture, potato slices, and cheese, until all ingredients are used.
  14. For the final layer, arrange the remaining potato slices on top and sprinkle with the remaining cheddar cheese.
  15. In a small bowl, combine melted butter and bread crumbs. Mix well.
  16. Sprinkle bread crumb mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
  17. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  18. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  19. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  20. Let the casserole stand for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For even potato slices, use a mandoline slicer.
  • Soaking the potatoes in cold water prevents browning and removes excess starch.
  • Don’t overcook the ground beef.
  • Customize with different vegetables, cheeses, or spices.
  • Add a layer of caramelized onions for extra flavor.
  • Spice it up with chili powder or cayenne pepper.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese like Gruyere, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack.
  • Add a layer of crispy fried onions for a crunchy topping.
  • Assemble ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours (add extra baking time).
